Hengze Steel · Material Yield & Cost Planning

Coil-to-Usable-Material Cost Calculator

Estimate usable material yield and the real cost of a processed steel coil. Enter your coil dimensions, purchase price, trimming allowance and processing losses to compare cost per usable tonne, kilogram and square metre.

Material & coil details

Select the product and enter the known coil data.

Known coil weight

Coil diameter method

Assumes a tightly wound circular coil with no significant air gaps.

Known strip length

For the most reliable result, use the actual net coil weight. A dimensional estimate does not separately model coating mass, paint film, winding gaps or packaging.

Purchase & processing costs

Use your own quoted rates; the tool does not fetch live market prices.

Yield, trimming & scrap

Enter expected losses for your own processing line.

The calculator applies trim, process loss and rejection sequentially. Scrap credit is deducted only for the share of estimated losses marked as recoverable.

Planning estimate only. Replace example dimensions and loss assumptions with actual order and processing data. Confirm weights, coating specifications, usable yield and commercial costs with the supplier or processor before making a purchase or production decision.

How to Calculate Usable Steel Coil Cost

A steel coil’s purchase price does not always represent the final cost of usable material. Edge trimming, slitting or cut-to-length losses, rejected sections, processing charges, freight and scrap recovery can all affect the cost of saleable output. This calculator combines the values you enter to estimate material yield and the batch cost allocated to usable output.

Which coil products can I calculate?

The calculator supports galvanized steel coil (GI), Galvalume steel coil (GL), prepainted galvanized steel coil (PPGI), prepainted Galvalume steel coil (PPGL), Zn-Al-Mg coated steel, ETP / SPTE tinplate and prepainted aluminum coil. Choose the closest product type, then enter your actual dimensions, density, quoted price and processing assumptions.

How is usable material yield calculated?

Estimated usable weight is calculated after sequentially applying the edge-trim allowance, process-loss percentage and rejected-material percentage to the input coil weight. The resulting yield is usable weight divided by input weight. Use actual production records to set loss assumptions for your line.

How does scrap recovery affect the unit cost?

The calculator subtracts a scrap credit based on the estimated total loss, the percentage of that loss that can be recovered, and the scrap value per tonne. If scrap is not sold or credited to the job, leave the recovery percentage or scrap value at zero.

Are the calculated costs suitable for a final quotation?

No. Results are planning estimates, not a supplier quotation or production guarantee. Confirm the actual net coil weight, coating and paint specifications, thickness tolerances, yield, freight terms, processing charges and scrap value before committing to an order.
